Newton Highlands
Newton Highlands got its start as a rural agricultural Community, similar to many of the other villages of Newton. Development was slow as there was only two roads granting access to the area, and as late as 1870, fewer than twenty families called Newton Highlands home. Following the completing of the Back Bay landfill project, trains ran more efficiently through the area and development in the area boomed. By 1974, the village, with 521 residents, was firmly established. The residents voted and the Community was named Newton Highlands. The village today remains as a mainly residential area with a small commercial district.
The Hyde School, named for the first mayor of Newton, was erected in 1894 to help promote the village's suburban development. The school still stands today and gives visitors a look back in time at late 19th century architecture. St. Paul's Episcopal Church, built in 1883 and moved to its present location in 1902, also gives visitors a look back into history. Marked by Gothic Revival Influence, the church displays pointed arched windows and doors with diagonal flush boards and wrought iron hinges.
Every June, the residents of Newton Highlands hold their annual Village Day, a celebration including a three mile road race, local crafters and vendors, great food, and free local entertainment. Visitors and residents alike will enjoy a taste of local culture at the festival. Visitors can also stop by the Newton Highlands Pizza Shop for a quick bite or Lincoln Street Coffee for a relaxing cup of java. While visiting Newton Highlands, be sure to check out the local shops such as Marcia & Bea Antiques and Second Time Around.
